Amantadine for severe traumatic brain injury

Amantadine is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Parkinson's syndrome induced by neuroleptic agents, and prophylaxis of type A influenza.

A paper published in the , March 1, 2012, shows that amantadine at doses ranging between 200 and 400 mg daily, compared to a placebo, accelerated the regression of the disorders of consciousness after traumatic brain injury. These disorders were appreciated using the DRS scale, Disability Rating Scale. This study was of short-duration, a month, and it is not known if the long-term outcome is improved by amantadine.
